Dan Taylor began Martial Arts training in 1965. He has trained in Jujutsu, Judo, Wrestling, Karatedo, and Kobudo. He is a former member of the U.S. Army Wrestling Team in Europe, and a U.S. National Karate Team in Japan. He is a retired Law Enforcement Officer and was the Chief Weaponless Defense Instructor for a large regional police academy. He is a graduate of California State University Fresno with a degree in Business Law. He opened a dojo in Visalia, California in 1975. In 2016, he retired from teaching regular classes but still teaches private lessons as well as clinics and seminars.

He learned Gojuryu Karatedo, Kenshinryu Kobudo, and Nihon Jujutsu from Ken Rosson, Soke. He has also trained with the following instructors in the U.S. and Japan: Teruo Hayashi, Yasuhiro Konishi, Tesshin Hamada, Motoo Yamakura, Rudy Crosswell, Shuji Tasaki, Morio Higaonna, Fumio Demura, Kiyoshi Yamazaki, Leo Lipinski, Sam Imoto.
