Endangered Species Day and 2023 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Endangered Species Act (ESA). In 1973, the bill was passed with almost unanimous bipartisan support to protect species in danger of extinction. Fifty years later, 55 species have recovered—including the bald eagles we regularly see along the Laguna de Santa Rosa! While bald eagles are no longer on the list, 1,678 animal and plant species are listed as threatened or endangered and 23 species have gone extinct. Clearly more work is needed!


Our conservation and restoration work throughout the watershed help in the important work to save rare and endangered species.

Camp Tule is a nature-based cay camp where children ages 6-12 are given space to nurture their creativity and spend time exploring and playing in nature. We are excited to invite campers back for another summer of outdoor adventures and fun!

Tell the Board of Supervisors to Place a Temporary Moratorium on Tree Removal in Sonoma County


For decades Sonoma county’s iconic oak forests have been excessively cleared in the name of development without rigorous regard for the ecological importance of native oak and forest lands. Currently we do not know how many acres of Oak forests are being cut down every year.


We are urgently asking the Board of Supervisors to immediately enact a temporary ordinance prohibiting destruction of oak woodlands, pending study of climate, fire, watershed, and habitat impacts.

Advance our quality of life and protect the beauty and natural resources of Sonoma County for all generations through grassroots political action and education.

Through education and grassroots organizing, Conservation Action engages with the public on environmental issues and policies that affect Sonoma County, influencing the way our area will be shaped for years to come.

Pepperwood's 3,200 acre reserve serves as a refuge for over 900 species of plants and animals. We are leaders in ecosystem-climate research, producing critical science to help guide our region's natural resource management and conservation planning. Pepperwood also offers environmental education opportunities for all ages to cultivate an ethic of conservation in our North Bay region.

At Pepperwood we have several meteorological station that track various climate and weather metrics. Our longest running station, which we fondly call “Grass MET,” has been active since 2010. These stations are part of our Sentinel Site and long term monitoring. We’ve been collecting a myriad of climatic, soil, vegetation, and wildlife data since 2010, giving us an ever-evolving long term picture of this landscape. Each data stream is like its own lens, allowing us to see how the land and its inhabitants are responding to a changing climate as well as different extreme weather events like wildfire and drought. These data also help center our stewardship actions in science, allowing us to adapt and change as needed. If you ask me, each data stream deserves its own blog, at least. So for this blog I’m going to focus on precipitation – so you can see where we’re at water-wise as we head into the drier months of summer and fall. Below is a basic map of Pepperwood with each of our meteorological stations marked with a green circle. The corresponding measurement shows how much precipitation each has received to date in this water year (water years are measured from Oct. 1st through Sept. 30th and are named for the year in which they end).

The topographical map indicates the locations of precipitation measurements at Pepperwood. But notice the difference in totals over short spatial areas. These differences suggest there are topographic and directional effects impacting the distribution of rainfall across the landscape. The “station of record” named Grass MET, is our longest running weather station (est. 2010) located at the Bechtel house. So how much rainfall does this mean we’ve received in total (at Pepperwood) as we round the bend into summer this week?

The graph above shows the current 2023 water year, which is depicted in dark blue with daily precipitation noted in bars of light blue. Our long-term (12-year average) is depicted in dashed red. We are currently 13.48” above average and will likely maintain this through the end of the water year. The bulk of this year’s precipitation was derived from two large storm windows: late December though mid-January and the entire month of March. Both storm windows brought a series of atmospheric rivers. However, unlike previous years these atmospheric rivers were spaced out enough to avoid major flooding events in communities lower in the Russian River watershed. Now let’s compare the water year we’re in with previous water years.

We expand the percentage of people in Sonoma County who benefit from healthy land, understand the value of nature, and cultivate a sense of reciprocity with the environment.

Challenges like catastrophic wildfires have dramatically increased with climate change. In the face of this reality, LandPaths cultivates a connection between people and the land as one of the solutions to the problem. LandPaths’ garden and community hub in southwest Santa Rosa welcomes you! Our half-acre community teaching garden at Andy’s Unity Park in southwest Santa Rosa, is a place where the neighbors like you grow food, tend the land, practice organic gardening, connect with the natural world, and gather together for positive action and belonging.

You are warmly invited to learn about wildlife camera at Ocean Song-Myers. Since 2014, LandPaths volunteers and staff have participated in a community science Wildlife Camera Program at Bohemia and Riddell Preserves.This project is designed to develop a baseline of fauna present on LandPaths preserves. This project also allows public to feel more connected to our preserves and the wildlife that live on these preserves. This training is intended for all volunteers interested in participating in LandPaths’ Wildlife Camera Program, but is also open to volunteers that wish to learn more about wildlife cameras. Also as part of this training, you will get the opportunity to explore many remote and exciting sections of the OceanSong-Myers Preserve.

At the heart of all LandPaths’ Camps are joyful experiences in nature! This week we will be enjoying all the things that make LandPaths’ camps unique, hiking through fields and forests, canoeing on the pond, bonding as a group while playing nature themed games and learning all about the plants and animals that call this nature preserve in west Sonoma County home.

In addition to all the wonderful time spent in nature, this week will center LGBTQIA+ youth in recognition that through meaningful relationships with one another and the outdoors, we can build community and experience brave spaces and joy together!
