Dr. Hekman has practiced psychotherapy for over 30 years. She received her BA in Psychology from UCLA and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Fuller Graduate School of Psychology. Her first full-time internship was at the VA Hospital in Long Beach, CA, with an emphasis in medical-neuropsychology. She completed a second full-time internship at the USC Medical Center, with a focus on psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Dr. Hekman received a doctorate (Psy.D.) in psychoanalysis from the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute, now the New Center for Psychoanalysis, where she is a core faculty member and a training and supervising analyst.

She is Certified by the American Psychoanalytic Association as a Training and Supervising analyst and is a Fellow of the American Board of Psychoanalysis.
