Chlorine is a disinfectant added to our city water supplies to keep us safe from bacteria, parasites, viruses, and other water borne ailments. Chlorine is highly effective as a disinfectant, but is it safe to drink? According to the EPA and other government agencies “legal limit” guidelines, it is. However, “legal limit” does not always equal safe, especially when many of those limits have not been updated for almost 20 years. A passing grade from the federal government does not always meet the latest health guidelines. In addition to Chlorine, many municipalities are now also adding Chloramine, a mixture of chlorine and ammonia, because it is more stable in water. Chlorine evaporates from water when exposed to air within about 24 hours, however Chloramines will remain stable in water for weeks. These and other chemicals are found in unfiltered drinking water.

Most people know how their skin and hair feel after swimming in a chlorinated pool. Limp hair and dry itchy skin. Over time, the chlorine in shower water produces similar effects as the chlorine in pool water. And the steam from that shower also contains chemical fumes from the chlorine evaporating into the air you breathe.

Chlorine strips hair of the natural oils, dries it out and makes hair color treatment fade faster. Chlorine also damages your skin. The heat and stem of a shower encourage skin pores to open up. The chlorine then enters the skin through the open pores. This can result in skin problems.
