I checked out a few boats which were mostly mis represented. One afternoon I was in Long Beach looking at boats advertised on Craigslist and I walked intoIsland Yacht Anchorage which is located in the Cerritos Chanel of Long Beach. I saw a boat that was for sale in that marina. That boat wasn’t for me, so I went to the marina office and asked the lady working there if there are any other boats advertised for sale? Her response was“If you’re looking for someone to help you find a good boat call this gentleman, Rick Portanova. He happens to be the most skilled and Honest yacht broker I’ve met.” She handed me his business card.As it turns out those words could not have rung more true to me.Rick immediately returned my call after I left him a message that I was looking to buy a boat. He asked me pertinent questions about what I was looking for and immediately started sending me boats that he thought would be ideal for me. We looked at quite a few boats. Rick would make calls and ask all of the correct questions regarding the Yachts condition and history. He would then give me honest feedback and and would tell me that “You’ll know when You’re standing on your boat.”One morning Rick called me and said “There’s a boat I want you to go see immediately, I know its a far drive for you, but I just spoke with the owner and I have a good feeling about this boat, can you go now?” Luckily, I was able to arrange my schedule and drive from Carlsbad to Ventura to take a look at a boat that Rick had made a call on my behalf. Rick called the owner back and said Alex is on his way, he’ll be there at 3:00 p.m. I met the owner, who seemed like a good guy and asked him if it’s cool if I call Rick so we could have a FaceTime call and go through the boat with him on speaker phone? The owner agreed and we went through all the elements of the boats systems. Rick skillfully guided the conversation with poignant questioning with the owner and myself. Steve: Lon Bubeck helped with the purchase of my first sailboat over 27'. He helped setting up times to have the boat surveyed, inspected and taken out on a shake down run. I live 2 hours out and it made my life easy to have someone handle all the ins and outs of buying a large purchase with little experience.He even came out the morning I took ownership and was going to take the sailboat across the harbor to it's new slip and I couldn't get the mainsail up.
