Acupuncture is a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has been practiced for thousands of years and is now often used to complement and enhance the benefits of western medicine. Simply put, acupuncture is the physical act of inserting a needle into a specific location (acupoints) on the body to induce a physiological response.


Our bodies consists of pathways called meridians in which Qi (our vital energy or life energy) flows through. Meridians connect all organs to body structures. When there is an imbalance in the flow of Qi, disease can occur resulting in pain or illness. By inserting fine needles into acupoints, we can help restore balance to the flow of Qi. This improved flow of energy stimulates our body's natural healing abilities, promoting both physical and emotional well-being.

Many people fear that acupuncture will be painful but when performed by a licensed acupuncturist, it should be very relaxing for you. After acupoints have been selected, your skin is cleaned with alcohol. Then a sterilized disposable needle is inserted into the acupoints. The needle itself is very thin (10 acupuncture needles will fit into a traditional hypodermic needle) and in most cases you will not feel any pain. Often you may feel a slight feeling of heaviness or distention. The needles typically stay in place for 20-30 minutes. This is a perfect time to close your eyes and relax! In addition to needles, we may use additional modalities ranging from electrical stimulation, moxibustion, cupping and/or Chinese medicinal herbs.
