Downey United Methodist Nursery School began in 1965 with one director and a single teacher. The simple idea of beginning each new day with love and understanding has grown into four classrooms, five mornings a week. Our purpose is to provide children a loving environment where they may grow, develop, learn and be equipped for future education. The program is designed to meet the developmental needs of young children 2 1/2-5 years of age. It provides experiences that enrich and enhance each child's cognitive, language, social, emotional, physical and creative development.


A child's work is PLAY! In play, children are learning how to learn. They are exploring and experimenting as they build relationships with their world and themselves. We encourage the six C's: Confidence, Competence, Cooperation, Coordination, Consideration, and Compassion. Our goal is to create a stimulating environment to promote the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of each child.


We believe in using a child-centered approach to learning with the teacher as role model and guide. Teachers will be responsible for providing age-appropriate learning opportunities and will enable each child to learn at their own pace. Our experienced staff meets the training and education required by the state for preschool educators.

Meet Helia Castellon! She is the Center Director at Rancho Los Amigos KinderCare in Downey, California. Helia attended East Los Angeles College, where she earned an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts and an Associate Degree in Child Development. She also attended Pacific Oaks College, where she earned a degree in Human Development and Early Childhood Education. She has been with KinderCare since 2019 and was a teacher and a director previously. Outside of work, Helia enjoys watching and supporting local LA sports.
