The term “chamber” is an adjective denoting the space in which music is performed. It comes from the French term chambre, meaning room. A chamber orchestra refers to a group of musicians that plays in rooms rather than concert halls.


The tradition of chamber music was first established in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, and Beethoven during the so-called Viennese Classic Era.

In chamber orchestras, there is usually only one performer for each instrument part and there are usually no featured soloists. Performers are equal parts in the musical “conversation” passing the motif to one another.

Alasdair Neale, Music Director of the Marin Symphony since 2001, is announcing that after two more concert seasons, he will end his tenure with the Symphony upon the conclusion of the 2022-2023 season.
