The Carquinez Bridge is actually two bridges. Located near Vallejo, on Interstate 80 between Contra Costa and Solano counties, the original crossing opened in 1927. To accommodate the ever-increasing traffic flow on I-80, in 1958 Caltrans constructed a parallel bridge to function as the eastbound span.


The original span was replaced in 2003 by a graceful suspension bridge. It carries westbound vehicular traffic across the Carquinez Strait, as well as bicycles and pedestrians on a bicycle and pedestrian pathway.
