Nicole’s 5-year-old son loves trash trucks and everything to do with them, including the family’s big blue trash bin.

Nicole, a Moorpark resident, physiologist and self-proclaimed germaphobe, didn’t want to squash his curiosity about waste collection services but also didn’t want him near their bacteria-laden bins. She and her husband, both Conejo Valley natives, started looking into the best ways to keep their cans clean—and learned some pretty grimy facts in the process.

Armed with the knowledge that rinsing the bins out with a hose does little but waste water and washing with chemicals only harms animals and pollutes storm drains, they saw a need in the community for a door-to-door, eco-friendly cleaning service and set about outfitting a trailer with a mobile trash-bin-cleaning system.

With Nicole at its helm, Got Clean Cans? launched in January 2022. Within six months, the small company had serviced over 1,000 cans in the region.

Last month, Got Clean Cans? was nominated for the 2022 ‘Best New Business’ award by the Moorpark Chamber of Commerce.

Beyond chatted with Nicole, 36, about the company’s endeavor to clean up the community’s trash bins.

Beyond: How has growing up and building your life together here in the Conejo Valley shaped your business approach?

Nicole: Because we’ve been here for the majority of our life—I went to Agoura High School and my husband went to Westlake High School—we saw it as a wonderful place to raise a family. We also recognized that the Conejo Valley was missing this service and we believed it would greatly benefit from it. So that was kind of our motivation to say, “Hey, let’s bring something new to this community that we love so much.” We’re bringing in this brand-new service that a lot of people have not heard of unless they’ve lived in the Midwest or the East Coast, where this service is much more common.

Beyond: What made you realize there was a demand for a trash can cleaning service in this region?

Nicole: Something that struck me is a lot of people in the Conejo Valley have to keep their trash cans in their garage or near their back door, and we do that, “How quick can I lift the lid and throw it in there and leave?” And the trash cans still smell when they’re empty because it’s not trash but bacteria you’re smelling. California also recently passed the bill where waste food products need to be disposed of in the green or yard clippings bin, so now we have rotting food in our trash bins. Some people back up to open space, and there’s raccoons, possums and all kinds of other wildlife that want to come get that food in there, including flies, which lead to maggots. Nobody wants to deal with that.

Beyond: This does not sound like a glamorous gig, but you make the process look fun in your videos on social media. What do you like about your job?

Nicole: I wish I could somehow share the smell with you but I can’t.

Nicole: You can imagine . . . it’s bad. But then the glow up is just remarkable, and it’s so satisfying. We’ve had clients who just can’t believe it’s the same trash can. So I love that satisfaction. I love clients coming out and saying how much they enjoy it and they finally don’t mind taking out the trash. So no, trash cleaning is not glamorous, and no one wants to do dirty work. But with our trailer fabricated the way it is, it’s also pretty hands-off for us.

Nicole: We come on your trash collection day, take your empty trash can over to our trailer, and we have a lift that lifts it up onto the wash bay and inverts it onto the power-washing spray heads. The heads rotate 360 degrees to clean out the inside of the can, and then we have a high-pressure washer hose that also cleans the exterior, all the spiderwebs underneath, the handles and the wheels. We spray an eco-friendly freshener inside, tag your can and return it to your curb. We don’t take your cans away—it’s all done right there for you.
