The Sunnyvale Materials Recovery and Transfer Station (SMaRT Station) accepts garbage and recycling materials from Sunnyvale and Mountain View residents and businesses.

Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.*, seven days a week. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

Ensure all open loads are covered and secured. Per Sunnyvale Municipal Code 8.16.180, a fee of $15 will be charged for uncovered loads and a tarp will be issued.

Rates are determined by type of material disposed, per cubic yard or per large item.

Glass bottles and containers (no auto or window glass, ceramics or mirrors)

Note: Due to a decline in the paper recycling market, paper will no longer be accepted at the SMaRT Station Center. Curbside paper collection is not affected.

Paint in original containers (Monday through Friday) per the PaintCare program guidelines.

Electronics: computers, TVs and monitors (limit four), small appliances, carbon monoxide alarms

Sharps, needles or lancets, (in biohazard, or hard plastic container with screw-top lid marked "sharps")

*Limit is 10 gallons in 5-gallon capacity or smaller non-breakable containers with screw-top lids.

California Redemption Value (CRV) is paid on eligible bottles and cans by count (up to 50) or by weight.

CRV eligible containers of different material types must be sorted prior to arrival (such as glass, plastic, aluminum). Sorting is not allowed on-site.

Containers must be emptied of liquids prior to arrival. Emptying liquids at the SMaRT Station is prohibited.

Appointments available between 8 a.m. and *4:45 p.m., seven days a week.

*This is the last appointment before Center closes at 5 p.m.

Furniture and other items in good condition rescued from the garbage and recycling areas of the SMaRT Station are placed in the re-use trailer for customers to take home at no charge.

Compost and mulch are available year round to residents of Sunnyvale, Mountain View and Cupertino.

The compost is made from local yard waste and is certified organic by the US Composting Council. It is processed at Z-Best Composting in Gilroy.

The mulch is natural 1"-3" wood pieces made from local woody material.

Available supply of compost and mulch can vary. Call before you visit: 408-752-8530.

We DO NOT accept foam peanuts, mattress cushion soft foam, Polyurethane, EPP or PE.

EPS is the white beaded foam mostly used as packaging material around furniture, electronic and packages received, food shipping boxes and medicine coolers.

Look for the triangle #6 symbol at the bottom of the foam

No need for appointment, you can just stop by any time that is convenient for you within this time frame

For drop off of residential EPS, please place small foam pieces in bags. No need to break down large pieces

Such as the foam that comes with furniture, TV etc. - You can bring large pieces loose.

We charge $5 per large foam cooler/box, $2-$3 for smaller cooler, paid in cash at drop off.

Please place the foam in plastic bags or in open cardboard boxes. Large pieces can be brought loose.

Make sure the foam is clean of any debris, nails or stickers and is completely dry.
