I was born and raised in Jerusalem. I completed my undergraduate education at the American University of Beirut in 1973. I received my medical degree from Al-Mansoura Faculty of Medicine in Egypt in 1980. I completed my residency in Internal Medicine at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. I then completed a fellowship in Nephrology at the University of California, San Francisco.

I have published several scientific papers in various publications and received several professional awards including the Silver Scope Award, which recognizes excellence as a consulting specialist, as well as many teaching awards. I am involved in teaching the medical students from Stanford when they rotate through Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara and have a formal appointment at the voluntary clinical faculty at Stanford as an associate Clinical Professor of Medicine.

Joining the Permanente Medical Group in 1987, I have held a variety of administrative positions. Currently, I am the Sub-Chief of the Department of Nephrology and the Assistant Chief for the department of medicine at Santa Clara. In addition, I am the chair of the chiefs of nephrology in Northern California Kaiser Permanente.
