The CQC class is similar to the medieval grappling class, but in this class we are focusing more on the use of punches and kicks.

The skills that we learn in this class are similar to the WWII combatives taught to the American and British soldiers.

Available to children ages 8 and up, Dragon Slayers is a challenging and fun program for kids who dream of being a musketeer, pirate, or knight.

Students learn the the same sword fighting techniques as in the main classes, only presented in an age-appropriate manner. Starting with soft "boffer" swords, our Dragon Slayers learn confidence and control in both attack and defense. When they are ready to move on to solid core foam swords and eventually wooden "waster" swords. Dragon Slayers who complete the program graduate to the main Longsword classes.

Students are expected to attend class at least once a week but twice a week is recommended. This allows a student to progress rapidly in skill and provides a greater sense of accomplishment.

Students are expected to arrive at class at least 5 minutes early and ready to participate in the class. Each class will start with a warm-up and skills review. Drills are combined with strategy and technique in a playful way to engage the mind and build dexterity and endurance. Each class ends with competitive exercises that allow students to challenge their abilities in a safe and engaging way and enjoy swordplay. DEMAS instructors are always available for questions and to work on technique.

The first few classes are designed to familiarize students with the basic body movements of medieval swordfighting. We start with padded swords for the small children, heavier padded weapons for the older children and wooden swords as the children get older. The wooden swords will help to accustom them to the weight of the sword. Our practice swords are used, often along with other safety gear (masks, safety glasses, gloves), in full-speed and full-contact activities that allow the students to practice the techniques learned in class safely.

All equipment and safety gear needed by the student is provided when the students start, but students are encouraged to procure their own equipment as they progress in the class. Comfortable clothes, shoes and gloves are recommended. Unlined leather gloves are best but cotton gloves offer comfort between sword and hand. When the students move to the heavier swords, hockey or lacrosse gloves can be worn for added protection.

The Longsword, sometimes referred to the 'hand-and-a-half sword' is predominantly used in both hands, but can be used single handed.

Our longsword curriculum is based on the techniques found in Fior dei Battaglia, a medieval combat manuscript written by Fiore di Liberi in 1409. As students progress they also study from Filippo Vadi's manuscript De Arte Gladitoria Dimicandi written between 1482 - 1487.

In addition to training to fight at a distance, students will also study the use of the dagger and wrestling within the context of the sword fight.

The medieval dagger (or rondel) was a thrusting weapon used to penetrate knightly armor at the joints. Our curriculum draws from Fior dei Battaglia, a medieval combat manuscript written by Fiore di Liberi in 1409.

The Grappling class incorporates the techniques from Nicolaes Petter's Clear Education in the Magnificent Art of Wrestling (1674) and Fior dei Battaglia (1409) by Fiore di Liberi.

As these techniques draw from medieval combat manuals, we do not in grappling on the ground. Instead we train to disable or take down the opponent and dispatch them from a standing position.

Our Rapier class draws from the manuscript Great Representation of the Art and Use of Fencing, written by Ridolfo Capoferro in 1610. As students progress, they begin incorporating the use of rapier and dagger from Joseph Swetnam's The Noble and Worthy Science of Defence (1617).

The Side Sword (or Spada da lato) is a single handed 'cut and thrust' weapon. Our curriculum is based on two manuscripts: The New Text on the Art of Arms (1536) by Achille Marozzo and the Treatise on the Science of Arms with Philosophical Dialogue (1553) by Camillo Agrippa.

As students progress they begin training with the side sword and buckler, a small shield which can be used for both offense and defense.

The Sun Sword class uses lightsabers and will teach you how to swing your lightsaber so that it is flashy and still maintains a martial basis that will allow you to look good and be able to fight with it.
