4worldlovers: This garden is a memorial to St. Clare of Assisi (c. 1193-1253), religious mystic and follower of apostolic poverty, spiritual friend of St. Francis, and the first woman in Western Europe to compose a rule of religious life for women.


The garden contains plants arranged in five main groups to portray the stages of Clare's life.

Girlhood: Medicinal and Household herbs commonly used during Clare's time (PDF)

The garden was installed at Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California, in 2003, the 750th anniversary of the death of St. Clare. Funds for the construction of the garden were donated by Bill Nicholson and his family in memory of Ruth Nicholson.

4worldlovers: Everett N. "Eddie" Souza Park is located at 2380 Monroe Street, Santa Clara. This beautiful 2 acre park on the San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail features playgrounds, picnic/barbecue areas, an open grass area, a native plant/pollinator community garden, off leash dog area and a restroom. The Community Garden portion features many demonstration areas and rented raised beds individuals and groups to grown their own organic fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers.

Open Garden Tours: Mar. - Nov., 2nd and 4th Wednesdays, 4:30 p.m. - 6 p.m.

The public is invited to visit the Everett N. Eddie Souza Park & Community Garden and tour it's many attractions. Inside the garden we have various demonstration areas that will inspire the gardener and environmental steward in each of you. Take a stroll and discover on your own, or ask city staff to show you around. Some garden attractions you can look forward to see are:

Second Sunday Garden Share: Second Sundays, Mar. - Nov., 10 a.m - 11 a.m.

Every second Sunday, the "Eddie" Souza Community Garden opens its gates to all novice and experienced gardeners everywhere in a cultural garden exchange. Each month we will highlight a topic to discuss, however all topics (and plants) are on the table! We hope you can bring seeds, seedlings, recipes, garden food, plant cuttings, or even questions to exchange with your neighbors. No one will be turned away for coming empty handed.

Santa Clara residents living half a mile away, receive CalFresh benefits, are Senior Citizens, or have children in school will receive priority if garden beds become available. Not sure if you live within one-half mile of the Community Garden? See list of qualifying addresses.

Starting November 2, residents can donate their used jack-o-lanterns, pumpkins and gourds to the Compost Demonstration bins at Everett N. "Eddie" Souza Community Garden, 2380 Monroe street. Recycling your pumpkins will divert waste to the landfill and provide food for the worm bin at the garden. Visit during the Open Garden Tours, Wednesdays 4:30—6pm to see the Composting process where we turn pumpkin back into “soil”. Last day to drop off pumpkins is Nov. 30th at the Open Garden Tour, 4:30 pm – 6pm

Growing Gardener Classes offers the opportunity for young participants to get their hands in the dirt to plant, harvest, and explore what makes up healthy soil. They will also use their creativity on garden-based craft and engineering projects, all while growing in their appreciation for the natural world around them.
