The Sunnyvale Materials Recovery and Transfer Station (SMaRT Station) accepts garbage and recycling materials from Sunnyvale and Mountain View residents and businesses.

Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.*, seven days a week. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

Ensure all open loads are covered and secured. Per Sunnyvale Municipal Code 8.16.180, a fee of $15 will be charged for uncovered loads and a tarp will be issued.

Rates are determined by type of material disposed, per cubic yard or per large item.

Glass bottles and containers (no auto or window glass, ceramics or mirrors)

Note: Due to a decline in the paper recycling market, paper will no longer be accepted at the SMaRT Station Center. Curbside paper collection is not affected.

Paint in original containers (Monday through Friday) per the PaintCare program guidelines.

Electronics: computers, TVs and monitors (limit four), small appliances, carbon monoxide alarms

Sharps, needles or lancets, (in biohazard, or hard plastic container with screw-top lid marked "sharps")

*Limit is 10 gallons in 5-gallon capacity or smaller non-breakable containers with screw-top lids.

California Redemption Value (CRV) is paid on eligible bottles and cans by count (up to 50) or by weight.

CRV eligible containers of different material types must be sorted prior to arrival (such as glass, plastic, aluminum). Sorting is not allowed on-site.

Containers must be emptied of liquids prior to arrival. Emptying liquids at the SMaRT Station is prohibited.

Appointments available between 8 a.m. and *4:45 p.m., seven days a week.

*This is the last appointment before Center closes at 5 p.m.

Furniture and other items in good condition rescued from the garbage and recycling areas of the SMaRT Station are placed in the re-use trailer for customers to take home at no charge.

Compost and mulch are available year round to residents of Sunnyvale, Mountain View and Cupertino.

The compost is made from local yard waste and is certified organic by the US Composting Council. It is processed at Z-Best Composting in Gilroy.

The mulch is natural 1"-3" wood pieces made from local woody material.

Great service. If you have all your items sorted this process is fast also show up early for no lines! Most workers are very friendly, one not so much. They’re strict about you taking your own trash which is fine but don’t put the garbage in my car for me. (Yikes) Other than that small gesture, the pay out is ok and the workers are prompt, fast, & helpful. You’ll require ID for your first visit & payout at this facility. I have to say I have used many different centers & this is by far one of the best I’ve encountered. Easy, fast. & fair pay out seeing as to how many other centers are closed now. They don’t weigh it in front of you. *Carlos is super helpful* show up early.
