Fourth District Senior Resource Center partners with the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program

The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program is administered by the County of San Diego, Health & Human Services Agency, Aging & Independence Services, and its purpose is to find meaningful volunteer opportunities for adults age 55+. The RSVP program held its annual volunteer recognition lunch for South County volunteers on May 31, 2023, at Rohr Park. Many 4th District Senior Resource Center volunteers attended and brought their smiles and amazing energy with them. Medals and Distinguished Service certificates were awarded to the top 10 volunteers in the South Region with the most lifetime volunteer service hours at the end of 2022. Rosemary Pope was honored for 19,179 hours, Ida Ford was honored for 10,226 hours, and Beverly Henry was honored for 6,389 hours. Herbert Argrow was honored with a Dedicated Service award for his 24+ years of volunteer service. As a special treat, Carmelia “Toot” Bell, shared her amazing talent and entertained us by singing a few songs. She was truly one of the highlights of the day!

Since 2002, the Fourth District Seniors Resource Center (FDSRC) has worked to enhance and embrace the quality of life for our “seasoned ambassadors” by providing a wholesome and safe environment for them to thrive, while assisting them to live more independently and proactively. We provide quality services to our district’s lower-to-moderate-income seniors and their families through a variety of resources. FDSRC does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, and political opinion or affiliation.

The new George L. Stevens Senior Center was formally opened in March, 2006. The building itself is LEED certified, which means it is environmentally-friendly and “green” in materials, and in all aspects of the facility’s maintenance. This allows us to sell our energy back to the gas and electric company, which becomes a source that helps us sustain ourselves. The facility features a multipurpose assembly hall, meeting space, classrooms, an exercise room, a boardroom and a commercial-sized kitchen.

4worldlovers: The AARP Tucson Information Center recently hosted an open house for AARP members and the general public to celebrate its recent renovation and expansion.

The Information Center, in addition to providing helpful resources and information, now has a conference room for local community and program presentations as well as offices.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide assistance and AARP Driver Safety Program classes will now be held there beginning this winter. Information Center volunteers also continue to provide visitors with a host of AARP literature and resources on a variety of issues important to people 50+. Some of the helpful information at the center include resources about Medicare and Social Security, consumer protection and health care.

"We're excited about the recent expansion which will allow us to provide more services and assistance including helping with taxes during this upcoming 2012 tax filing season,” said Cynthia Fagyas, AARP Arizona Communications Director. “We will also feature community presentations on various issues and offer the AARP Driver Safety Program class at our center. We hope folks will stop by and visit with our volunteers to learn more about the services we offer here. We’re also looking for volunteers to help staff the center. We have flexible shifts and it's a great way to stay engaged and assist people on a variety of issues."

4worldlovers: The Ed Brown Center for Active Adults (formerly the Joslyn Senior Center) was named after local community activist Ed Brown, who retired to Rancho Bernardo after a lengthy career in Corporate America. He and several others spearheaded the movement to build Rancho Bernardo Community Park with its Recreation Center and the building that now houses the Ed Brown Center and the Rancho Bernardo Tennis Club. The Center was completed in 1989 and renamed in Ed’s honor in 2009 to thank him for his generous support and his long-time commitment to our community.

Kim comes to us with a wide variety of professional skills acquired in both the for-profit and nonprofit arenas. She has been a volunteer and Board Member at Girlfriends Care for more than 10 years and a volunteer at Serving Seniors for seven years. As a business owner she has worn hats from customer service to finance and is looking forward to taking EBC to the next level!


Lynn is a community volunteer, working with many area nonprofits, and recently "retired" after ten years as Executive Director of the Ed Brown Center for Active Adults.


Tim has an impressive 25-year background in the areas of Financial Analysis and Project Management, with expertise in Financial and Administrative Operations for a variety of companies as well as the the U.S. Navy. He's currently hard at work putting EBC on a firm financial footing.


Valerie is a well-known figure around Rancho Bernardo, serving in leadership roles in every organization from Girl Scouts to Spirit of the 4th! She is a past Director of EBC, and we're delighted to have her back!


You might recognize Sue as a front desk receptionist, but she is also our "Bridge Lady," organizing our weekly games. Sue's aim is to increase and enhance the available activities at EBC, so keep your eyes on the Monthly Calendar!


An EBC member since 1993, Juanita is the Center's Membership Liaison. She is also an avid Padres fan, and rarely misses a home game!


Jim is a retired home improvement contractor and still works part time in the window and door replacement field. He enjoys pickleball, swimming, gym workouts, music, dancing, and people.

Greg was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. He received a Bachelor’s Degree from Temple University in Philadelphia. He has been a sales representative for Humana for 15 years, serving the senior population with Medicare solutions and other financial services. He and his wife, Andrea, moved to San Diego in 2000. The McMullens serve their parish community in Carmel Valley, as well as serving at homeless shelters in downtown San Diego.

Lucky is a ball of fire who was recently named the 2023 Woman of Impact by the American Heart Association. By day she is a CPA at Deloitte. In her "free" time she teaches Bollywood Dance, has a passion for healthy living and a fondness for seniors.

Bret is a Real Estate Associate with Coldwell Banker in Rancho Bernardo. He "gives back" to his community through Sunrise Rotary, the Poway Chamber of Commerce and his service on the EBC Board of Directors.
