California Aeronautical University opened its San Diego Flight Training Center to better serve residents of San Diego County and help them achieve their professional pilot career aspirations. Students can study online and fly locally to earn their flight training degree from the University while remaining in their San Diego County hometown.

The second largest city in California, San Diego is known for its miles of beautiful, white sand beaches along the coast of Southern California. With its mild Mediterranean climate, world-known attractions and cultural activities, San Diego provides a great location for residents to live, including desirable year-round flying conditions for those who want to learn how to fly.

Located at Montgomery-Gibbs Airport, students can study online and fly locally out of San Diego. You have access to CAU’s certified flight instructors and the CAU fleet of aircraft, including Cessna 172s and Beechcraft Barons. All instruction is delivered by CAU, with no courses or flight instruction contracted to a third party.

The University offers financial aid and VA educational benefits, including the GI Bill, to those who qualify.

CAU San Diego is FAA Part 141 approved. This approval allows CAU graduates to qualify for a restricted ATP, which includes a 250-500 flight-hour reduction and reduces the minimum age to earn their ATP certificate from 23 to 21. This can allow CAU grads to enter the pipeline for aviation careers much quicker than other candidates.

Shane Terpstra founded the company in 2010, having had a career in Information Technology, having founded his own IT company in 1999. Shane started flying at the age of 16 and has pursued multiple facets of aviation. Shane is an ATP-rated pilot, a FAA FAASTeam Lead Representative, Accident Investigator and, former airline Captain. Shane was involved in Search and Rescue for over 20 years with the Civil Air Patrol as an Incident Commander, Command Pilot, and Director of Emergency Services for the state of California. Shane is currently the Director of Safety and Chief Pilot for the largest flight club in the United States.

Over the past 10 years, Shane’s first time pass rate remains above 80%, mostly thanks to the amazing students with many ratings above 90%.

Shane is a Airline Transport Pilot in both Single and Multi-Engine aircraft, Certificated Flight Instructor (Single & Multi-Engine Land and Single-Engine Sea) with Instrument Privileges, an FAA Gold Seal Flight Instructor and a NAFI Master Instructor, a designation held by less than 1,000 instructors worldwide.

Patrick Ciri was introduced to flying at a young age through paragliding and although the love for aviation was clearly there, he never imagined he could build a career through flying. After years spent in Marketing, Patrick took a leap of faith and left his desk job to pursue a career in aviation. A year and half later he is now a newly minted CFI ready to share his passion for flying as he builds his hours to one day join the airlines.
