This library, housed on the second floor of the Villa Parke Community Center, is the Pasadena Public Library’s newest information outlet. The Villa Parke Community Center Library opened its doors on July 12 1992, after a long awaited restoration of the recreation facility.

The Villa Parke Community Center Library was designed to accommodate the inexperienced library user, as well as to respond to the needs of a diverse population. Info-Stop’s community and career information, core reference collection and circulating fiction and nonfiction collection make up an integral component of Spanish/English services and activities at the Villa Parke Recreation Center.

Due to its unique location, this library supports and sponsors many activities in conjunction with other agencies which are housed in the center, i.e. Women, Infant and Children, Pasadena Headstart, Senior Center, and Youth Opportunity Center. The library also works closely with school, neighborhood and parent organizations and provides special programs for children and adults. Since its inception, the library has become a very strong link between the Spanish-speaking community and city government.

Home to the system’s Armenian language collection, Santa Catalina is one of the oldest branch libraries in the Pasadena system, dating back to 1913. The present branch building opened in 1931. The branch’s staff can accommodate both English and Armenian speaking patrons.

Since 1918, there has been a relationship between Santa Catalina Library and Longfellow School. Currently, the library is part of the School Library Co-Op that provides regular visits for all classes from the school. The library also provides on-going programs for Allegra and Lake Avenue preschools.

The overall collection has approximately 49,000 items. In addition to reference materials, books on tape and large type books, Santa Catalina also has smaller special collections including: Literacy, Careers, Young Adult and Paperback Classics. The children’s collection is strongest in the areas of folktales, curriculum-related nonfiction, and Spanish language materials. For adults, the branch has a good basic collection of mysteries, self-help books and popular fiction.

The meeting room with tables and chairs will accommodate up to 32 people. This room is free to groups who do not charge an admission fee or restrict admission on the basis of membership.

Santa Catalina’s collection reflects the diversity of the surrounding neighborhoods. The branch has special collections for children and adults in Armenian and Spanish. The periodicals collection includes Armenian newspapers, as well as several African-American and Spanish language magazines.

Santa Catalina Branch is proud of its Preservation Corner. This collection of books and materials highlights the architectural Bungalow style evident in neighboring houses. Preservation Corner is sponsored by the Bungalow Heaven Neighborhood Association, Historic Highlands Neighborhood Association and the Pasadena Public Library.
