La Pintoresca (“the picturesque”) Branch Library, built in 1930, was named for the hotel which had previously occupied its northwest Pasadena site. Its parkland location centers La Pintoresca in the most highly populated service area of any Pasadena Branch. La Pintoresca Branch Library serves also as a community center, providing local residents with a welcoming, informal meeting place.

As an affiliate of the Foundation Center, the La Pintoresca Branch Library provides access to Foundation Directory Online Professional. Foundation Directory Online Professional is the Foundation Center’s electronic grantseekers’ database for foundation and government grants. This database is only accessible at the La Pintoresca Branch Library through a library computer or by use of a personal laptop by connecting to the library Wi-Fi at the branch. We invite the entire family to join us for an hour of quality Spanish-language picture books read by a native speaker, learn traditional songs, and create fun crafts. Wednesdays at 4 p.m.

Led by Dr. Ayesha Lindsey Randall, this is a celebration of African American culture though books and crafts. Last Friday of the month at 4 p.m.

The collection of approximately 56,000 volumes includes several special collections, including African-American history and literature, arts and music, and international and regional cookery. The branch has special section of career and small business books along with job listings from various sources, as well as an extensive Spanish language collection, both juvenile and adult, with an emphasis on browsing and casual reading material.

The meeting room with tables and chairs will accommodate up to 53 people and has a handicap access through the north entrance. This room is free to groups who do not charge an admission fee or restrict admission on the basis of membership. It is available Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and reservations can be made based on availability. La Pintoresca is temporary home to “Leaders, Dreamers and Rebels,” a sculpture by artist Jena Priebe. La Pintoresca also has a display case that is available for the public to display art. For more information, please contact Rosa Cesaretti at (626) 744-7268.

La Pintoresca also offers a computer lab, used for computer classes and available to the public at set hours. The lab is available for adults working on job applications, resumes, classwork, certificates, LearnKey, employment databases, and grant-writing/researching software from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m Monday through Friday. The lab is also open for children only after school—subject to staffing availability—Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 5 pm.

The Pasadena Tournament of Roses unveiled an official Little Free Library in celebration of Read Across America Day. The replica of Tournament House, the headquarters to the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game, is filled with books for the community to enjoy and provides a space for book-sharing.


“Little Free Library’s mission is to be a catalyst for building community, inspiring readers, and expanding book access for all. We do that through a network of volunteers across the globe,” said Greig Metzger, Little Free Library Executive Director. “We are excited to work with the Pasadena Tournament of Roses volunteers as they help share books and are thrilled by the custom Tournament House replica Little Free Library that will be an impactful addition to our network.”

In addition to the impressive new Little Free Library, volunteer members of the Tournament of Roses “book bombed” other little libraries throughout the Pasadena area, stocking them with books donated by Literati, a subscription book club company that curates books for all ages. Last month, the Tournament of Roses was able to get 10,000 books into the hands of local children (ages 5-12) thanks to the generous donation by Literati.


“Literati is passionate about increasing early childhood literacy. Thanks to partners like The Pasadena Tournament of Roses and Little Free Library, so many families in Pasadena will have access to vibrant kids books,” said Vanessa Castañeda, Director of Philanthropy at Literati. “When a child learns how to read, they unlock their potential to learn how to do anything.”

In another way to honor Read Across America Day, a handful of the Tournament of Roses’ 935 volunteer members will serve as virtual guest readers to students across the Pasadena Unified School District and community organizations. For the past several years, members have taken time to encourage a love for reading with area students.


Known for the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game, the famed Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association may entertain the world once a year, but the organization prides itself in giving back to the community all year long.


From Tournament of Roses President Bob Miller: “As our country and community emerge from this pandemic, perhaps on the minds of many is the recognition of the importance of literacy and reading. The Association’s Little Free Library—carefully, skillfully, and lovingly built by Kevin Sommerfield, the husband of Executive Committee Vice President, Terry Madigan—is a small but mighty reminder of the importance of reading to learn, have fun, and enjoy daily peace of mind.”


A special Little Free Library book-sharing box made its debut on Read Across America Day at the LeBron James Family Foundation’s (LJFF) I PROMISE Village, a family-first community that serves as transitional housing for I PROMISE families in Akron, Ohio. The project is a team effort carried out by LJFF, the Little Free Library (LFL) nonprofit organization, JOANN and WKYC Studios.

The Little Free Library is located in a brand-new community reading nook at LJFF’s I PROMISE Village, which provides stable housing and family programming to help kids thrive in school and beyond.

“We created the I PROMISE Village to be a safe space for families that not only gives them a roof over their head, but also life skills, unique resources and enriching programming that can help them achieve their goals,” said Michele Campbell, Executive Director of the LeBron James Family Foundation. “In addition to on-site tutor and mentorship opportunities, this Little Free Library will keep our kids and families at the Village reading, which we know can open so many doors and possibilities. In everything we do at the Village, we want to engage and inspire our families to dream bigger than they ever thought possible.”

The library was designed by Cleveland-based fabric and craft company JOANN with a bright and modern paint-by-numbers motif, which was finished by resident I PROMISE families. The reading nook where it is located is also decorated in a fun, colorful style, making it an irresistible destination for young readers.

“Little Free Library has been instrumental in providing reading resources and access to youth, and I PROMISE Village is an exceptional location for one of their physical libraries,” said Amanda Hayes, Director, Corporate Communications, Diversity & Inclusion, JOANN, Inc. “JOANN is delighted to have designed the custom library and nook with an inspiring aesthetic to keep the youth of I PROMISE Village enthralled with books, and the imaginative journey that comes with reading.
