Once a year we welcome you to try the sport we are so passionate about beginning!

In February of each year we will open our canoes to new members who want to get involved with competitive outrigger canoe racing.

Every Saturday and 2x weekly. West end of the beach at 1 Whitecliffs Drive, Newport Beach . Our canoes are blue and orange.

The Open Enrollment period is from February through April. Novice practices are on Saturdays in February and March. Once the time changes in March, your coaches will advise you of the weekday schedule.

We let you try us out for free … but after three times, we ask for $100 to continue. This is non-refundable, however, it will be credited towards your novice dues should you decide to continue and join the racing team. Novice dues for the Iron and Sprint races for 2017 are $300. This covers all of your racing and training through July. Should you continue into 9-man season, you will be assessed an additional $150 to complete your annual dues (the same as returning members).

The ability to tread water for 5 minutes (you might get wet …)

Either a strong base fitness level OR the commitment to improving your fitness (or both!)

We supply the instruction, the canoes and (in the beginning) paddles.

4worldlovers: It begins this Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. It is the time of year when we open our doors to new members who want to participate in competitive outrigger canoe racing.

The Open Enrollment period starts this February 2023. Practices will run every Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Check-in and registration begin at 9:30 a.m.

After the initial two months, you will be expected to buy your paddle for the remainder of the season.

You must sign a release waiver at the beach on your first day paddling with us.

LUNCH PLATE: “Local style” with Hawaiian pork, teriyaki chicken, macaroni salad, rice, and fruit. Limited vegetarian items are available upon request.


FROM THE NORTH: Take I-5 South to the Pacific Coast Highway/Camino Las Ramblas exit just past San Juan Capistrano (approximately 15 miles south of the 405/5 interchange). After exiting, bear right at the fork and merge onto Pacific Coast Highway North. Drive one mile and turn left onto Dana Point Harbor Drive (just past the pedestrian bridge).

FROM THE SOUTH: Take I-5 North to the Beach Cities/Camino Las Ramblas off-ramp, which veers left under the freeway and then merges onto Pacific Coast Hwy. Drive one mile and turn left on Dana Point Harbor Drive (just past the pedestrian bridge).


Once on Dana Point Harbor Drive, take your first left into Doheny State Park. The park opens at 6 a.m. ($15 per vehicle per day). Metered parking is also available.


Note that trailer parking and canoe rigging are slightly different than in past years; see map. Continue past Doheny State Park and turn left at the next signal, Puerto Place. The parking lot for trailer parking and canoe rigging, 34500 Puerto Place, Dana Point, CA, is a short distance on your left and is the only left turn possible from Puerto Place. This parking lot opens at 5:30 a.m.

Each tow vehicle must pay for parking at $1 per hour from pay stations within the Puerto Place lot. Pay station receipts must be displayed on the vehicle dashboard. Make sure to purchase enough hours for your anticipated stay and add extra hours as needed. Trailers must be removed from the parking lot by 6 p.m. The Puerto Place lot will not be open for trailer parking on Friday. If you decide to bring your trailer down on Friday, you must pay for and park in the Embarcadero public launch ramp parking area, but you will be required to move into the Puerto Place lot Saturday morning. No rigging is allowed in the launch ramp parking lot.

The Puerto Place lot is adjacent to Doheny State Park and can be accessed by foot from the State Park via a trail at the north end of the beach near the jetty. Canoes must be staged here until permitted to launch. Paddlers must walk from the State Beach to rig and launch as no public vehicle parking is allowed. Please bring cradles or padding to protect your canoe hulls and amas for rigging. The surface is concrete and asphalt.
