4worldlovers: Did you know that you could survey for bats using acoustic detectors that record echolocation calls? The calls are unique to each species so it's a valuable non-invasive technique to survey for bats. This year, the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay NWR was part of the North American Bat Monitoring Program. Staff from Bat Conservation International deployed a single recorder for one week at Bair Island and recorded two bat species: the Hoary Bat (Lasiurus cinereus) and the Brazilian free-tailed Bat (Tadarida brasiliensis). Bats play an important role in the ecosystem by consuming insects and pollinating plants. Mallard Slough Trail and sections of Alviso Slough Trail are Closed due to construction at Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Alviso California. South San Francisco Bay Shoreline Project (Phase I) between the Alviso Slough/Guadalupe River and Coyote Creek is underway.

In the heart of California's high-tech industry lies a wildlife oasis in an urban sea with 30,000 acres of habitat for millions of migratory birds and endangered species. Established in 1972 through local activism, the refuge provides not only critical habitat for threatened and endangered species, but opportunities for people to enjoy the benefits of nature.


We are so excited to welcome your campers back for another year of Marsh-In Summer Camp at Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. This is the 44th year of free Summer Camp being offered to Bay Area youth entering Grades 1-6. Campers will have the opportunity to learn, complete fun self-guided activities, interact with Refuge Rangers & Biologists, learn to fish, explore the Refuge in Fremont, and much more!

Sits on the southern end of San Francisco Bay. It is indeed a wildlife oasis in an urban sea. The refuge, created in 1972, was largely the result of grassroots efforts by the local community to protect the San Francisco Bay ecosystem. Today, it provides not only critical habitat for threatened and endangered species, but opportunities for people to enjoy the benefits of nature.


Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge was established to preserve and enhance wildlife habitat; protect migratory birds and threatened and endangered species; and provide opportunities for wildlife-oriented recreation and nature study for the surrounding communities.


Fifteen habitat types exist on the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, contributing to the diversity of wildlife on the refuge. More than 340 plant species and 280 species of birds call the refuge home, and millions of individual birds fly through the area during peak migrations. In addition to plants and birds, the refuge provides habitat for fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates!

4worldlovers: Perched on stilts above a salt marsh, the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center is your introduction to the ecology of the San Francisco Bay Estuary. It features exhibits, programs, and activities designed to inspire a sense of appreciation, respect, and stewardship for the bay, its inhabitants, and the services they provide.

Mission: The mission of the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center is to foster the connection between people and the San Francisco Bay-Estuary by providing environmental education and recreation programs. Our goal is to inspire a sense of appreciation, respect, and stewardship for the Estuary, its inhabitants, and the services they provide.


Brief History: The center opened in 1986 as a place where school groups, community groups, and the general public could learn about the ecology, history, and significance of the wetlands surrounding San Francisco Bay. The San Francisco Bay is an estuary, a place where saltwater and freshwater mix. We call this a “salt marsh,” but, in fact, these wetlands consist of a complex set of salt, fresh, brackish, and tidal ponds. From 1856 through the 1940s, this area was used for salt production. In 1980, land managers began removing dikes in order to restore tidal action to an area that was originally a mixture of tidal wetlands and associated uplands.


About the Trail: The adjoining park and trail system is called the Hayward Regional Shoreline and is operated by the East Bay Regional Park District. The Hayward Regional Shoreline is a mosaic of landscapes that extends across nearly seven miles of diked trails adjacent to the San Francisco Bay. The shoreline trail is part of the San Francisco Bay Trail and passes through and around mudflats, salt marsh, grasslands, and salt evaporation ponds.

Plan a Visit: Individuals, groups, and families are welcome to visit the trail throughout the year. Please remember that many shoreline areas provide nesting and feeding grounds for wildlife. In order to minimize human intrusion upon the plants and animals, please remain on the trail while you observe wildlife.

The Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue (YUWR) and Education Center is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization serving the San Francisco Bay Area in California since 2001. We are dedicated to the rehabilitation of orphaned and injured wildlife living in urban city centers and education of the public about how to live harmoniously with our cities’ wildlife.

When an orphaned wildlife mammal is found, we nurse these animals back to a healthy state where they are able to be released back into the wild.

Through education to children and adults alike, we try to raise awareness of these wild residents of our cities in the hope that a better co-habitation will lead to less injuries/orphans and more enjoyment of the urban wildlife with which we share our cities.

Through hotline referrals, we give advice on where to go to get help when you find an animal in need.

We are a 501c3 grassroots nonprofit organization and are 100% volunteer-run and donation-funded!

To heal the sick and injured/orphaned animals brought to us and ready them for release back into our Urban Wilds.

To educate people of all ages in the wonder and enjoyment of wildlife and nature and why it is so vital we protect it.

To teach patience and compassion so that urban wildlife is viewed in a more positive light by everyone- not as pests, but as important co-habitators of our environment.

By living in Yggdrasil’s branches they nourish the World Tree, and in turn, the tree nourishes them.

Without the cradling branches of the world tree the Universe would fall. Each of us support its Branches and Yggdrasil supports us all.
