4worldlovers: Last week in our look at the Mass we focused on the various parts of the Eucharistic Prayer, the most important and powerful prayer of the Church. This is because Jesus Christ becomes truly present through this prayer, which is a memorial (a making present) of His Passion, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension. Jesus enters our midst as these moments are re-presented in the sacrifice made on the altar. He comes to us – Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity – so that we can adore Him, and also consume Him, and thus be in communion with Him. This is what comes after the Eucharistic Prayer, in what is called “The Communion Rite.”

Before we look at the parts of the Communion Rite, let us answer an important question: why did Jesus want us to consume Him in the Blessed Sacrament? One way to answer this comes from St. Thomas Aquinas. Looking at all seven Sacraments, Thomas saw an analogy to the natural life. He said, just as we are born naturally, so in baptism, we are reborn spiritually. Similarly, just as we grow and mature naturally, so in Confirmation we grow and mature spiritually. Likewise, just as we must eat and drink well to survive and thrive naturally, so we must eat and drink well to thrive spiritually. In the Eucharist, Christ gives us the necessary spiritual food and drink – His Body and Blood – without which our spirits would decay and die.
