The Crucible is a nonprofit organization and art school dedicated to making the fine and industrial arts accessible for all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Founded in 1999 by Michael Sturtz, our work is centered in Oakland and the East Bay, where we offer classes and team builds in glass, metal, clay, wood, and more to over 8,000 people each year.

As part of celebrating and empowering Oakland, we offer free programming, scholarships, and paid leadership opportunities for youth and adults who live locally and otherwise could not participate.

4worldlovers: The Golden Gate Atelier offers a one of a kind experience for artists looking to master the craft of traditional drawing and painting. Click below to learn more about our Full-Time Program.

The Golden Gate Atelier Full-Time program is dedicated to the highest standards of drawing and painting. Through rigorous project work, and daily mentorship and support, students progress from the foundations through to mastery at a pace that is optimized for them.

Écorché sculpture is a visually based, practical 20 – 24 week course where students are taught the bony and muscular structures they need to learn in order to master drawing, painting, and sculpting the human figure.

The Golden Gate Atelier offers a number of workshops, including figure, landscape, and still-life painting for those interested in having a hands-on experience in classical methods.

Andrew Ameral and Sean Forester will lead a group to see the Sargent show at the Legion of Honor.

Sean Forester will lead an online class on David McCullough’s wonderful book The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris.

Our curriculum is devoted to a disciplined study of the human figure. Students draw and paint from life using sight-size, the technique Sargent learned in Paris. In addition, they receive a thorough grounding in constructive drawing and artistic anatomy.
