4worldlovers: The club was first known as the Lanakila Athletic Club, but later changed to Lanakila Outrigger Club and finally changed to King Harbor Outrigger Club. Today everyone "Unofficially" calls it Lanakila Outrigger Club. Launching from the beach every day was hectic and taught the crews to be efficient paddling through surf.


Lanakila is made up of a diverse group of paddlers ranging from our junior paddlers ages 12-19 to our adults ages 19-75, and from varied backgrounds such as lifeguards, firefighters, teachers, and many more. Members come to the team with varying athletic backgrounds, with some looking to be highly competitive and others for the chance to exercise and meet new friends.


Lanakila Outrigger Canoe Club is based in Redondo Beach, California. We have as many as 5-6 men's teams and 5-6 women's teams in a given season, and have varying levels of experience in each team from beginners (novice) to world class athletes who have competed in the Olympics. That is over 150 paddlers each season.

Once a year we welcome you to try the sport we are so passionate about beginning!

In February of each year we will open our canoes to new members who want to get involved with competitive outrigger canoe racing.

Every Saturday and 2x weekly. West end of the beach at 1 Whitecliffs Drive, Newport Beach . Our canoes are blue and orange.

The Open Enrollment period is from February through April. Novice practices are on Saturdays in February and March. Once the time changes in March, your coaches will advise you of the weekday schedule.

We let you try us out for free … but after three times, we ask for $100 to continue. This is non-refundable, however, it will be credited towards your novice dues should you decide to continue and join the racing team. Novice dues for the Iron and Sprint races for 2017 are $300. This covers all of your racing and training through July. Should you continue into 9-man season, you will be assessed an additional $150 to complete your annual dues (the same as returning members).

The ability to tread water for 5 minutes (you might get wet …)

Either a strong base fitness level OR the commitment to improving your fitness (or both!)

We supply the instruction, the canoes and (in the beginning) paddles.

This includes Hobie Mirage Kayaks, there are not many places that you can rent these specialized kayaks, this and our knowledge of these kayaks has made us one of the biggest Hobie Kayaks dealers in California We know our product line from extensive playing in our spare time as well as taking care of customers long after their purchase. We work on kayaks and SUP, reparing and rigging on a daily basis.

If you are curious about fishing from a kayak or intersted in becoming better aquanted with paddle technique on a stand up paddle board, we offer classes for kayak fishing and offer beginner stand up paddle board instruction, either of these can be in a group setting or private sessions.

We are open year round, seven days a week. Rain or shine we are here to assist you, so stop by and see all there is we offer.
