Young Israel of Northridge was founded in 1981 by the Macales, Jacob and Yarmak families who were looking for a synagogue with traditional values that adhered to Jewish law. YION moved from house to house until finally settling into its current location in 1989…


Primarily serving the communities of Northridge, Granada Hills and North Hills, YION is an orthodox, friendly, welcoming community with a unique devotion towards genuine spiritual growth. Under the leadership of our dynamic Rabbi Nachi Klein, YION offers: daily minyanim, regular shiurim, weekly classes, one-on-one learning, an active sisterhood, community eruv, a keili mikvah.

The seder is over. You are about to settle back into your chair, when suddenly you are roused from your wine-induced reverie by everyone launching into the traditional rendering of Chad Gadya. “What are we doing singing nursery rhymes at a time like this?” – You think to yourself. “Here we all are energetically belting out a song that everyone sings, and no-one has the slightest idea of what it’s got to do with Pesach! Is Chad Gadya no more than what ‘I know an old lady who swallowed a fly’ would have sounded like if Burl Ives had been Jewish? Is it no more than a harmless ditty to amuse the children? Or does Chad Gadya have a secret meaning? A hidden depth of allusion beneath the surface…

Let’s look at the surface a second. Chad Gadya has ten stanzas.

The Book of Vayikrah concludes with Moshe contrasting the different responses that will follow the Jews’ obedience or defiance of Hashem’s commandments. Obedience will lead to peace and prosperity; abundant crops; and protection from our enemies. Defiance will lead to (among other things, and in stages of increasing severity): plagues; enemy sieges; and national exile. However, if the Jews repent, Hashem promises to once again remember His covenant with the Patriarchs and accept us once again as His people.
