Our Wing Chun school, West Coast Wing Chun, is in Long Beach, Ca near LBCC and the city of Lakewood, in Southern Los Angeles County in California, USA.

Certification is through the Samuel Kwok Martial Arts Association. Chief Instructor, Master Bryan Talbot, is the US Representative for Grandmaster Samuel Kwok Martial Arts Association, the only disciple of both Ip Man’s sons, the late Ip Ching and Ip Chun. Our instructors are certified, hold valid teaching permits and undergo rigorous instructor training.

Wing Chun 詠春 Kung Fu is a martial arts system that originated in Southern China. A female nun, Ng Moi, created the art, and Grandmaster Ip Man later modified it when living in Hong Kong. Bruce Lee, a student of Grandmaster Ip Man and one of the world’s most recognized martial artists, popularized Wing Chun in the United States during the middle of the twentieth century. He used Wing Chun as the foundation of his particular fighting style and philosophy, Jeet Kuen Do.

More recently, the success of the Ip Man movies rekindled interest in Wing Chun across the world.


Wing Chun Kung Fu is a system of self-defense and empowerment based on Principles and Concepts that can be applied in both scopes. As a system of self-defense, the art makes use of scientific principles to overcome force of a bigger and stronger opponent. Additionally, it utilizes short-range power and sensitivity of touch, as seen through the use of Chi Sau or Sticky Hands.

The Core Principles of Wing Chun are Relaxation, Center-line, Economy, Facing and Yin/Yang. Great emphasis is placed on concepts of efficiency, structure, power, and speed. Wing Chun makes use of quick, changing angles, simultaneous attack and defense, agile footwork and low, practical kicks.

Wing Chun’s open hand forms are Siu Lim Tao (Little Idea Form), Chum Kiu (Seeking the Bridge Form), and Biu Gee (Thrusting Fingers Form). The Wing Chun weapons are the Luk Dim Boon Kwun (6 1/2 Point Long Pole), and the Baat Cham Do (Eight Cutting Knives). We also practice form on the Wing Chun Wooden Dummy.

Wing Chun’s traditional training equipment are the Wing Chun Wooden Dummy, Tripodal (Kicking) Dummy, and Wall Bag.

Sports fights, such as boxing or MMA, are regulated events with rules and a structured environment, while real fights lack rules and can involve multiple attackers, weapons, and unpredictable environments. Practitioners should not rely solely on sports fights for self-defense training, but also train for real-world scenarios with situational awareness, de-escalation tactics, and self-defense techniques that are not restricted by rules or regulations. Developing a range of skills and mindset that can be applied in any situation is crucial for effective self-defense training.

Our Kung Fu heritage began in Hong Kong in the 1950s with Ip Man and his famous martial arts student, Bruce Lee. Our Wing Chun instructors teach Dragon Family Wing Chun, part of the Leung Sheung lineage (Ip Man's senior-most student in Hong Kong). Dragon Family Wing Chun is a practical self-defense martial art system which works to allow a smaller person to overcome a bigger, stronger attacker. Broken bones, cuts, etc., are common for this kind of training. This may scare many people but you are learning a combative art and we are not here to play about. Superficial training will only mislead people into believing that they have special skills which in fact no one can possess. Fighting is savage business and will usually cause injuries to both parties. Soft training will not prepare you for this”
