4worldlovers: St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Apostolic Church has been the spiritual and cultural center for the Armenian community in Pasadena and surrounding areas for over 60 years. Since the first meeting of the St. Gregory parish council in 1947, the church grounds have burgeoned into a dynamic complex that currently includes our newly built sanctuary, the recently renovated and updated church hall, and the Alfred and Marguerite Hovsepian Day School. The parishioners – with Archpriest Rev. Fr. Sarkis Petoyan serving as pastor – has more than 170 active members and oversees various organizations which serve to strengthen the spiritual, cultural and educational life of our members. These include the Ladies’ Society, Men’s Forum, Saturday School and Sunday School, ACYO, Choir and Friendship Club.

St. Gregory Armenian Apostolic Church welcomes you to participate in our weekly Divine Liturgy – the spiritual celebration which has been a religious tradition for Armenian Christians for over 1,700 years. We hope you will have the opportunity to share in the meaning and experience of our worship, and also to become a part of the St. Gregory family. Services are held each Sunday beginning at 10AM, and are usually followed by a fellowship gathering immediately afterwards.

Immanuel Armenian Congregational Church is a family-based congregation located in Downey, CA. Our church was formed in 1930, originally in Los Angeles.

St. Augustine reminds us, “Today our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven; let our hearts ascend with him. Listen to the words of the Apostle: If you have risen with Christ, set your hearts on the things that are above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God; seek the things that are above, not the things that are on earth.”


The Catholic Feast of the Ascension in most diocese of the United States has been transferred to Sunday for pastoral reasons to allow the faithful to attend this feast day. What is “the Ascension?” After 40 days of preparing His Apostles to carry on the mission of the Church and spread His Gospel, Jesus ascended back to the Father in His glory. Although, He ascends back to the Father, our Lord Jesus never leaves us, but rather He reminds us of our goal to get to Heaven. Our Communion of Saints reminds us of our connection with those who faithfully departed from their physical life, but our still united to us spiritually with their prayers and concerns for us to join them in the eternal glory of Heaven. St. Therese of Lisieux invites us, “I believe the Blessed in heaven have great compassion for our miseries. They remember that when they were weak and mortal like us, they committed the same faults themselves and went through the same struggles, and their fraternal tenderness becomes still greater than it ever was on earth. It’s on account of this that they never stop watching over us and praying for us.”


St. Basil the Great teaches us “At present we have a human body but in the future we will have a celestial one, because there are human bodies and celestial bodies. There is a human splendor and a celestial splendor. The splendor that can be attained on earth is temporary and limited, while that of heaven last forever, which will be shown when the corruptible becomes incorruptible and the mortal immortal.” However, this does not mean that we wait until prior to our physical death in order to begin thinking about Heaven since we are already living eternal life right now! If we strive to be holy, we will experience the virtue of happiness that we will experience on a greater level in Heaven. St. Josemaria Escriva encourages us to consider, “I am every day more convinced that happiness in heaven is for those who know how to be happy on earth.” The feast of the Ascension is not just a feast to remember our Lord Jesus’ triumphant into Heaven, but our invitation to follow into His eternal glory. St. John Henry Newman sums up for us the mystery of the Ascension, “For the disciples, Jesus was “the glorious Captain of their salvation, the Champion and First fruits of the human family, this crown of His great work.” And the Ascension constitutes “the triumph of redeemed man … the completion of His redemption.”
