South Korea had been engaged in a war against North Korea for a full year when Benny Kim embarked on a journey to master the art of bonsai, inspired by the work of his horticulture teacher. It was 1951 and he was only in the 7th grade.

The entire country of South Korea lay in ruins except the very small southern tip of the country, Busan, where he lived. Even as a boy, he was acutely aware of the state of the nation as war refugees—wounded and hungry—flooded his hometown. In a country where beauty was destroyed and art was considered a frivolity, he sought peace and solace in the joy of training bonsai trees.

His love of the art form kept him company through the national crisis that was to continue for two more years and through his own personal hardships growing up in a Post-colonial, war-torn country.

Although Benny loved the art of bonsai, he only enjoyed it as a hobby until he immigrated to the United States with his family in 1989 where he opened Kim’s Bonsai Nursery in Phelan, California in 1991.

Since then, his work and teachings have reached bonsai enthusiasts across the U.S.

Now in his mid-80's, Benny is admired and respected as one of the most passionate advocates and eminent bonsai master artists in the United States.
