One of Arizona's only federally designated Wild and Scenic Rivers, the Verde River springs from the ground in the rural community of Paulden, southwest of Flagstaff. It meanders southeastward 195 miles through private, federal, state and tribal lands before reaching its confluence with the Salt River near Phoenix. You can take a side trip from LA to get here and stop at Joshua Tree National Park along the way; making your next stop at Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, both along I-10, which makes for easy driving.

Also, the Los Padres National Forest is situated in the beautiful coastal mountains of central California and spans over 200 miles, north of Los Angeles. It includes most of the mountainous lands from Ventura to Monterey and extends inland. Elevations can be as high as 8,847 feet.
