4worldlovers: The word pivot is not one I would imagine using to describe the history of Porridge + Puffs when I started the project in 2014 (thank you JGold!). Porridge + Puffs (affectionately called p+p) has always been a continuum of space, community, nature, innovation, creativity, artisanal execution, and the humans that we center this work around.

While having the privilege of dreaming, creating, collaborating, and thinking at PKite Studio (a continuum of PHENAKITE), I was really missing, and feeling guilty/obligated to re-open p+p as a restaurant for a community I loved so much. My intent was for p+p to be a community and employee-driven space; more affordable for guests and more sustainable/less-straining for team members. My personal endeavor was for it to be slower paced with concentration on the everyday, a place where I can observe and shift systems, hire and train staff differently, lead with inspiration rather than apprentice-style. I also wanted my community to support this (and you all did - thank you).

Ultimately, I am realizing these goals are not realistic for a burnt out creative who is better at dreaming and executing her own art than being a responsible employer.

Every week this past winter and spring was a challenge. Admittedly, I was going through Seasonal Affective Disorder (I’m a sun baby) and my ADHD racing at all time hyper speed, maintaining more multi-verses than I can even process (aka mental health breakdown). This pressure along with the challenges of way-too-many projects, business complexities I couldn’t manage, and staff shortages, left my ADHD daydreaming a new reality that I thought I could will into being. Alas, my understanding of time and humans were not as keen as I hoped. Capitalism and being an employer are very complicated things for me to grasp; however, the plurality of systems intrigue me. I thought p+p would be this first hand experiment of rebuilding and emerging a new system.

I want p+p to be special, nothing less, ever. I want everyone (team member, collaborator, guest) to get the same joy as I do when I think about thoughtful food (especially something as soulful as porridge) and how it reminds us of our own humanity. I wanted to do right by every journalist who ever wrote about us and show institutions who nominated/awarded us accolades that we are worthy, integrity intact. I want to always carry my personal motto that I often remind team members (that probably burnt them out at this point): everything we do should be exceptionally unique and/or uniquely exceptional.

I’m exhausted from having to lead like this. I want to be a different kind of leader. I get glimmers of myself when I’m not thinking about others’ expectations but rather about ideas and a new way to lead. Current leadership takes me away from following my own creative compass and doing what I love - being a practitioner and trekking however I want . Conversely, I worry that being a solo-practitioner risking that the craft, art, and my way of thinking dies with me. I worry about things changing so fast that we do not have time to do it thoughtfully.

Ultimately, I cannot worry too much and keep leaning into being thoughtful. Being thoughtful means slowing down, embracing fluidity and letting go of rigidness. Being thoughtful now means ceasing daily operations, which is not a binary “closure,” mind you. Being thoughtful means being the type of leader that can step back and not have to succumb to capital, industrial, social endeavors, but rather define her work and its canon in unique and exceptional forms and constructs.

I want to spend the summer falling in love with food rather than burdened by it. I want to spend the next few months celebrating the p+p space and letting it live as the community space it was always intended to be. Lots of collaborations to come!

This will start with a very personal collaborative cooking class with Andrea Nguyen on the first day of the Solstice (Wed Jun 21st) celebrating her newest cookbook Ever-Green Vietnamese.

I’ll also be inviting all of you to join me as I spend time in the studio with People’s Pottery Project which is a few doors down from p+p in Hi-Fi.
