4worldlovers: NO. 217 BLACK STAR CANYON INDIAN VILLAGE SITE - The Indians who lived on the village located here had stolen some horses, and the whites followed them back to their camp. After a skirmish, the whites left with the horses that the Indians had not killed. In 1878 the Black Star Coal Mining Company had a mine at the mouth of the canyon.

It is a 5 mile hike from the trailhead to the site of the Indian village. It is uphill with plenty of switchbacks. Kyle Jarrett, manager of The Bill Beaver Project, guided Denis up to the site.

NO. 218 BARTON MOUND - Juan Flores, who had escaped from San Quentin, was being sought by James Barton with a posse of five men. Near this mound, Flores surprised Barton and three of his men, all four were killed. When Los Angeles learned of the slaughter, posses were formed, and Flores and his men were captured.

NO. 219 ANAHEIM LANDING - Soon after the founding of the Mother Colony at Anaheim in 1857, the Anaheim Landing Company established Anaheim Landing as a port for the Santa Ana Valley. Despite treacherous entrance conditions that caused several disasters, regular coastwise trade was carried on here for about 15 years.

NO. 220 MISSION SAN RAFAEL ARCÁNGEL - The San Rafael Arcángel Mission, 20th in the chain of the 21 California missions, was established in 1817 by the Franciscan Order. After the 'decree of secularization' in 1834, the buildings gradually fell into ruin. The mission was reconstructed on the original site in 1949.

NO. 221 SITE OF THE LIGHTER WHARF AT BOLINAS - This wharf was built in the early 1850s to load lumber on lighters to be floated out to the deeper water near the channel, where it was transferred to seagoing vessels for shipment to San Francisco.

NO. 222 LIME KILNS - Tradition is that the lime kilns were built by Russian stonemasons and worked by Indians during the Russian occupation of Sonoma County, which began in the spring of 1812. The Russians probably used the lime to whitewash their windmills, farm buildings, granaries, storehouses, and cattle yards, to tan hides, and to manufacture brick and tile.

300 ft W of State Hwy 1 (P.M. 22.1), 4.2 mi S of Olema (Park in the turnout that is 4.1 mi south of Olema. Head southeast through the meadow down to the creek. The kilns are west of HWY 1 and east of the creek.

The kilns are becoming over run by the surrounding vegetation. They can not be seen from the road. You need to go all the way down to the creek.

NO. 223 SITE OF PUTNAM'S CABIN - In August 1861, Charles Putnam built the first cabin for permanent habitation in what is now Inyo County. The building, located 130 feet west of this site, served as a home, trading post, hospital, and 'fort' for early settlers, as well as a survival point for travelers. It became the center of the settlement of 'Putnam's' which five years later took the name 'Independence.'

NO. 224 RUINS OF THIRD SERRANO ADOBE - Don Leandro Serrano set out orchards and vineyards and cultivated some of the fertile lands of the Temescal Valley. In the 1840s he built his third adobe, which the Serrano family occupied until 1898, on the well-traveled road between San Diego and Los Angeles.

Don Leandro Serrano was born at the Presidio at San Diego Feb. 27, 1785. His father, Francisco Serrano, came to Calfornia with St. Junípero Serra on the Portolá Expedition of 1769. In 1799, Francisco became the Acalde of Los Angeles. Don Leandro's brother was Jose Serrano. ~~~ Leandro Serrano was mayordomo of San Antonio de Pala Asistencia for the Mission of San Luis Rey.

NO. 225 FLORES PEAK - In 1857, Juan Flores and a band of outlaws murdered Sheriff James Barton and part of his posse at Barton Mound. Pursued by a posse led by General Andrés Pico, Flores and his men were finally caught on Flores Peak.
