On July 1, 2023, the quarantine for Mexican Fruit Fly (MXFF) ended in Valley Center and surrounding areas. The quarantine was declared on August 16, 2022, after the detection of five adult flies. The nearly year-long effort to contain and eradicate MXFF was a collaborative effort between local agricultural operators, residents, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), and the County of San Diego Department of Agriculture/Weights & Measures (AWM).
AWM would like to express their gratitude to the local agricultural community and residents for your cooperation during the quarantine. Thanks to your efforts, this pest of more than 30 types of fruit was kept from spreading and further impacting agricultural exports and the region’s food supply.
