Welcome to the AFAC web site! We are based at Montgomery Field (MYF) in San Diego, CA, just south of MCAS Miramar. The Club has approximately 60 active members and a fleet of three well maintained aircraft ready for recreational use or flight training. There is no waiting list for new or reactivating members!

As the original Miramar Base Flying Club, and after two years of show cancellations, AFAC resumed its long tradition of presenting a Static Display at the 2022 show! The two aircraft are pictured above. We had many interested from both on-base and the general public stop by to visit, get information, and take advantage of under wing shade.


It was a most enjoyable weekend for all members who participated, and greatly productive for the Club!

Golden State Flying Club has been offering primary and advanced ground school classes at our Gillespie Field facility for five decades. Our classes are taught in a classroom environment by experienced flight and ground instructors and consist of lectures, workshops, and stage tests. We're also an FAA authorized Testing Center enabling our graduates to take the FAA Knowledge Tests here upon satisfactorily completing a ground course.

At Golden State we understand that learning to fly is far more than passing some tests and learning basic flying skills. You'll find our instructors willing to dedicate the time and effort to assure that you achieve a complete understanding of the information and procedures needed for both the knowledge and practical aspects of becoming a pilot. Almost every flight school offers an INTRODUCTORY flight of some kind. We call our introduction to flying an "Introductory Course" because it offers the prospective pilot a very thorough experience in order for you to evaluate what is involved in obtaining a pilot certificate. It starts with a no-cost 3 hour long Orientation Class during which we familiarize participants with everything they'd ever want to know about learning to fly - whether it be here or any other school. Details of cost, time and effort are carefully described to enable potential students to make educated decisions as to how to proceed with their training. Next, potential students are then escorted onto our ramp and shown around one of our Piper Warrior aircraft, including observing a preflight and cockpit checkout. Next, qualified participants* are offered the opportunity to purchase our $199.95 Introductory Course package which includes TWO ONE-HOUR FLYING LESSONS, a textbook, pilot logbook and choice of 2 nights in our Private Pilot Ground School for the purpose of evaluating the course for your personal needs. When you're ready to take advantage of our Introductory Course, call us to register for the Orientation Class after which you can schedule the first of your two lessons. We schedule 2 hours of total time for each 1 hour flight lesson to allow time on the ground for pre- and post-flight requirements.
