Here at MCC United Church of Christ in the Valley we are Living Compassion, Loving Creation and are a Caring Community of Christ…and we are honored that you found us! We opened our doors and our hearts in 1972 when we became a part of a worldwide movement of churches founded by Rev. Troy Perry. Our roots within the Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC) were grounded in Rev. Perry’s vision of an inclusive and united church. This foundation led us into a discernment process to become even more inclusive by joining the United Church of Christ. On May 10, 2014, we were accepted into the United Church of Christ as a dually affiliated church; both MCC and UCC.

We believe strongly in making a difference in people’s hearts, minds, and lives, to help make this world a better place. Whether it is bringing Easter baskets to senior citizens, toys to children at Christmas, food to those in need in the city, or helping an AIDS Hospice in Tijuana put solar panels on their facilities to decrease their expenses, we try to live our faith of compassion.

We are also an inclusive and green Christian community of faith. We have made the Earth a member of our church, and we actively work at reducing our carbon emissions that impact climate change — that affect us and other life. We have a deep reverence for all life and the Earth, and we know that “For God so loved the world as to give the only begotten Child that whoever believes may not die but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) The world includes more than humanity, but all life, our planet, and the universe. We invite you to worship with our faith community. We are a close-knit group of families, neighbors, and friends who strive to discover God’s direction for our lives. We encourage searching minds and spirits as we celebrate together our faith in God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, through the guidance of the Holy Scriptures. Emphasizing individual choice and conviction, members follow the Word of God according to the dictates of their own consciences. Our church is called “Congregational”, reflecting our heritage in the New England Pilgrim experience in which local congregations retain control of their own decisions and direction. We are also a member church of the United Church of Christ denomination, which is dedicated to realizing God’s just and loving purpose in the world.

This shall prove to be a seed-filled Sunday as we explore Jesus’ fabulous parable concerning the Sower and her seeds as found in Matthew 13:1-9 and 18-23. Rev. Donald’s theme will be “Seedy” and song leader Faith Van Horsen will sing “Seeds” by Ralph Murphy and Pat Alger.


Susan Aldrich will be the liturgist for our in-person service this Sunday, and for our online service, Kim Van Horsen will be our liturgist. We thank her and all of our musicians, including Albert, Susan, Matt, Faith, and our Associate Director of Music Wyatt who provide music for our online services. We are always grateful to Wyatt for his wonderful editing of our online service, as well.

I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

You may have already worked this out, but these devotionals are written in advance of when you read them. Publishing runs on deadlines the way a church runs on meetings: not always convenient, but they’re how things get done.

When I write a devotional like this one (hours and hours before my deadline), I wonder whether a new war will erupt by the time the devotional is published—a war between nations, a war dividing a nation, a legal war against certain people groups, an ideological war of extremism.

I’m old enough to have been an adult and have an adult’s memory of the days leading up to the Iraq War. And more than fear, more than anger, more than hope, more than anything, what I feel these days is an eerie sense of familiarity, an eerie sense of coming doom. It makes the words of the psalm ring hollow when I read them: “I remain confident I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”

But then I remember. The psalms were mostly written by people living through times of trouble. The prayers of confidence were authored by people in turmoil, the prayers of joy penned by those in mourning, the songs of triumph by people beaten down by the world. The psalms were written by people who needed them to be true, who needed confidence, who needed goodness, who needed peace. In other words, they were written for people like you.

Whatever kind of world you woke up in today, I remain confident that the promises of God are still true.

Prayer: God, help me wait for you. Help me be strong. Help me take heart.
