    I am Father Juan Manuel Flores, the new Pastor of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus here in the City of Bakersfield. I am very happy to be here, and I look forward to working with you and for you. Thank you for all of the affection and respect you have expressed and shown me since my arrival. My satisfaction as a priest has always come from doing God's will, and that is what I try to do in my ministry.

    I’m going to make some changes to our policy regarding quinceañeras and smaller ceremonies such as marriage blessings (validations) and anniversary celebrations.

    While I enjoy these ceremonies which are celebrations of family life and love, I am feeling a bit “overscheduled” with the number of Masses that I am celebrating each weekend. Often times, families request full Masses for quinceañeras even though most of those present don’t receive Holy Communion. With regard to marriage blessings and anniversary celebrations, these do not have to be full Masses. Instead, they can be simple ceremonies which include everything except Communion. Of course, the expectation is that anyone who celebrates these kinds of events should be attending Mass on Sunday anyway.

    So, beginning immediately, all quinceañeras will be simple ceremonies celebrated by either me or one of our deacons. The ceremony will be done nicely but without Holy Communion.

    Marriage blessings and anniversary celebrations will now be simple ceremonies. Again, beautifully and reverently done, but without Communion. A deacon or priest can preside at any of these liturgies.

    Not every celebration has to be a Mass. We can gather and celebrate the various events in life with prayer, song and Scripture. The Eucharistic Liturgy (or Mass) has its proper place on the Lord’s Day (Saturday Vigil and Sunday).
